Derick F. Sylvester, CBA, LLB (UWI), LEC (HWLS), Attorney at Law

From as early as he could remember, Derick Sylvester had set his sights on becoming a lawyer and to fight injustice. Despite the most humble beginnings, his passion, drive and sheer grit propelled him to achieving this goal. He was born and raised in the Eastern Caribbean nation of Grenada and read law at the University of the West Indies in Barbados, and also at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago.

Throughout this autobiography, Sylvester presents unique insights into the trial process and he reflects upon the many cases in which he has been involved. One such case being his involvement in the resentencing of those convicted of murder in the Maurice Bishop Murder Trial. In addition to his work as an Attorney-at-Law, Derick Sylvester is an active and effective participant in public service in Grenada. He served as Chairman of the Allied Health Professional Council, and the Grenada Football Association Disciplinary Appeals Committee; he was Director of the Maurice Bishop International Airport Board, and the National Housing Authority Board; and from 2013 to 2018, he served as Chairman of the Public Service Commission of Grenada.

Trials of a Trial Lawyer traces the journey of Derick Sylvester’s life to date and explores the many experiences that have influenced his progression into the lawyer we see today. Written in his own words, this autobiography is emotive, engaging and reflects his empathy for the human condition, his passion for the law and his never-ending quest for justice.

“Couldn’t put this book down. Read it from cover to cover. Fascinating; enlightening! Should be read by students and practitioners of law, and the public at large. I’ve known the author for over two decades; a brilliant lawyer who loves his profession, has deep moral values, powerful work ethic, is courageous, and is committed to a life of service to Grenada and the entire Caribbean.”   Winston B. Coard

“This book gives a bird’s eye view and a ring side seat into the justice system in Grenada but more importantly it tells a story of the pure grit and determination of the author. The story of Derick F. Sylvester has just begun, he will never be stopped in his tireless pursuit of justice.”   Trevor J. Layne, MD

“In this book I have observed the rise of a man and I salute him for his accomplishments. It is my fervent hope that this work will inspire others.”   Vaughn Delano Sylvester-Viechweg, J.P.
